The Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW Dresden) is an independent, nonuniversity research institution and a member of the Leibniz Association, with approximately 500 employees from more than 40 countries. A large interdisciplinary team working across five institutes – spanning experimental physics, theoretical solid-state physics, chemistry, materials research, and electrical engineering – combines basic research with application-oriented research. The thematic focus areas include experimental solid-state research, theoretical solid-state physics, metallic materials, novel electronic technologies, and materials chemistry. Together, the researchers cover a broad spectrum – from theoretical modeling and synthesis of new materials, through their characterization and functionalization, to the development of prototypes and components. This research is complemented by a modern infrastructure for analytics and instrumentation.
