Market exploration trip to Spain: energy, hydrogen, electrolysis and fuel cell technologies from 7 to 11 April 2025

Press

Wirtschaftsförderung Sachsen GmbH is planning a market exploration trip to Spain from 7 to 11 April 2025 in cooperation with HZwo e.V. The trip will provide insights into current developments in the Spanish energy sector and establish contacts with potential business partners. The established contacts to Spanish clusters and networks will be deepened. Stops are planned in Seville and Huelva / Andalusia as well as in Barcelona / Catalonia. Registration is possible until 07.02.2025.

Information and objectives

Wirtschaftsförderung Sachsen GmbH (WFS), in cooperation with the Saxon hydrogen technology cluster HZwo e.V. and other partners, is planning a market exploration trip for energy, hydrogen, electrolysis and fuel cell technologies to Spain from 7 to 11 April 2025.

The programme is aimed at Saxon companies, research institutions and networks in the energy sector, in particular hydrogen, electrolysis and fuel cell technologies (H2 / FC), storage technologies, solutions for decentralised energy supply / energy efficiency and RE (PV, wind power, bioenergy).

Note on the expected travel costs: The travel and accommodation costs will be borne by the participants. Flights are expected to cost around EUR 800.00 (incl. taxes, plus service charge). The hotel costs amount to approx. 110.00 EUR/night, so that travel costs totalling approx. 1,250.00 EUR are to be expected.

Backround

Spain’s climate policy has broad social support and is also backed by the Spanish economy thanks to its strong climate awareness. It is not only energy companies that are expanding their business with renewable energies, industrial companies are also investing in self-sufficiency and are also very interested in H2 / FC and energy efficiency technologies.

Due to the high level of solar radiation and the stable, high wind yields in many regions, wind and PV energy, which has been competitive for many years without subsidies (grid parity), continues to have high potential in Spain. The share of electricity generated from RE will be around 50 % in 2024 and around 20 % of total energy demand (including heat). The expansion of wind energy and PV will be further accelerated, which will create a high demand for efficient production and storage technologies as well as relevant services.

In addition, the decision to connect the planned Spanish H2 pipeline network with the Central European (European Hydrogen Backbone) will make Spain a key player in the European market for green hydrogen and other green fuels. There is also enormous value creation potential for German companies in this area, as they have all the key expertise and infrastructure for the entire hydrogen value chain and can manufacture all system-relevant components.

Of the 6 GW of electrolysis plants planned in Europe in 2024 to produce 1 million tonnes of green H2 (EU target), 300 to 600 MW are planned in Spain. According to the Spanish Hydrogen Association (AeH2), more than 100 projects with green H2 are planned for 2024. These have a total volume of 21 billion euros. In the transport sector, an H2 infrastructure is to be established for road and rail transport.
