Modular testing and characterisation toolkit for the production of fuel cells and electrolysers

Overview

The publicly funded project HZwo:Inspect is looking at inline-capable 100 % inspection for fuel cells and their individual components (including bipolar plates, membrane/electrode assemblies) and stacks. Test procedures must be adapted to the significantly shorter cycle times and new methods  will be pursued in order to drastically reduce the time required for individual quality control modules. Suitable test methods will be characterised, selected, automated and further developed in the project in order to establish high-rate zero-defect production. By linking and evaluating different test methods, HZwo:Inspect contributes to the standardisation of the test process chain.

Motivation:

  • Creating a basis for the development of economical and sustainable fuel cell production in Germany and Europe
  • Benchmarking of various test methods with regard to their suitability for integration into high-rate fuel cell component production

Aims of the project:

  • Development of a multidirectional testing and characterisation toolkit
  • Development and prototypical mapping of concepts for automated and economical testing of fuel cell components (bipolar plate, membrane electrode arrangement) and stacks
  • Standardisation of the quality operations to be carried out with increased production capacities
  • Development of coupled test procedures and realisation of a digital twin for the virtual image of the test process chain

Duration: 01.04.2023 until 31.03.2026
