Hydrogen Innovations and Technology Center (ITZ H2)
The HIC Hydrogen Innovation Centre in Chemnitz is being established as an industrial research, testing and certification facility as a site of the ITZ H2. It has been designed in collaboration with SMEs, automotive suppliers, industrial companies, and experts from fuel cell research and aims to bridge scientific research with the transfer to disruptive hydrogen technologies and broad industrial value creation through the supply industry. Start-ups, small and medium-sized enterprises, automotive suppliers, and industrial companies from across Germany will be given the opportunity to test and certify their innovations and develop new standards for the global market.
With the ITZ H2, the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV) is implementing a measure of the National Hydrogen Strategy. The ITZ sites in Chemnitz, Duisburg, Pfeffenhausen and at the North site are intended to create a development, research and testing environment, particularly for start-ups, founders and small and medium-sized enterprises. The aim is to provide suppliers, manufacturers and developers of hydrogen technologies with new services that are unique in Europe. In an international context, the ITZ locations will also contribute to the development of technical regulations and standards for standardised hydrogen drive technology and infrastructure.
Focal points HIC

Innovation and Technology Center for Hydrogen (ITZ H2)
With ITZ H2, the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) is implementing a measure of the National Hydrogen Strategy. The ITZ locations in Chemnitz, Duisburg, Pfeffenhausen, and the northern site aim to create a development, research, and testing environment particularly for startups, founders, and small and medium-sized enterprises. Suppliers, manufacturers, and developers of hydrogen technologies for the mobility sector will have access to new services that are unique in Europe. In an international context, the ITZ locations are also intended to contribute to the development of technical regulations and standards for standardized hydrogen propulsion technology and infrastructure.

Project HIC Start
In the project HIC Start, HZwo e.V. specifies the HIC Hydrogen Innovation Center through professional preliminary planning, creates performance specifications, and carries out initiating work to successfully establish the HIC as ITZ H2 in Chemnitz by 2025. The Free State of Saxony supports HZwo e.V. for this purpose with €200,000 from May 2022 to June 2023.
HIC Start is supported under the technology funding framework by the Saxon State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Labor, and Transport.
This measure is co-financed by tax funds based on the budget approved by the members of the Saxon State Parliament.
